Introduced in late 1993 as part of Walthers' Go Intermodal Collection
was the Five-Unit All-Purpose Spine Cars. Five roadnames (TTX, BN, ATSF, UP, and CR), plus an Undecorated kit were
originally released in '93 with a $37.98 retail.
The kit featured collapsible hitches allowing for the cars to carry trailers ranging from
28' to 48' in length. The cars could handle containers of the 40', 45' or 48' variety.
Walthers notes the prototype first starting service on American railroads in 1988.
The Walthers Ready-To-Run Five-Unit All-Purpose Spine Cars was a
new item in the 1996 Reference Book. Walthers offered the set in five roadnames (TTX, BN, ATSF, UP, CR) selling for
$69.98.
