This site places the orgin of the modern Walthers HO-scale freight
car with the 50' Airslide Covered Hopper in 1987.
Walthers had throughout its history provided HO-scale freight car kits. Prior to the
mid-'80s, the majority of Walthers freight cars would be considered rather crude by today's standards. Kits sold before
the introduction and inclusion of the former Train Miniature offerings into the Walthers line in the 1980s often had raw wood
and metal materials and required a fair amount of craftsmanship.
Walthers moved into the market established by companies like Athearn and Roundhouse with the
new kits added to the line in the '80s. As stated, the mid-'80s saw the defunct Train Miniature kits brought in
the Walthers line. The first truly new tooling, never-before-available kit was the 50' Airslide Covered Hopper introduced
in the 1987 catalog.
It should be noted, Train Miniature announced a 50' Airslide Covered Hopper in 1982.
The Train Miniature Airslide was never delivered. Train Miniature ceases to exist not long after this announcement for
the 50' Airslide Hopper. Walthers starts their modern kit line with the former Train Miniature catalog. This is
only speculation, but in the purchase of Train Miniature assets, Walthers may have taken delivery of an in-development 50'
Airslide Hopper that later became this model.
The first group of 50' Airslides included six roadnames: Milwaukee Road, GATX, ADM, BN,
UP, and Grand Trunk Western. No Undecorated Airslide is found in the '87 catalog listing. The kit originally sold
for $5.95 and included sprung roller bearing trucks.
Walthers lists eight roadnames (ADM, BN, Wonder Bread, CNW, Golden
West, NS, GATX, and CSXT) in 1998 with a note that the cars then had new roadnumbers. The stock number remained the
same as it was in previous releases.
Walthers introduces ready to run 50' Airslide Covered Hopper models in the 2002 HO Reference
Book. The first ready to run release included six roadnames (UP, BN, Wonder Bread, GATX, CSXT, and BNSF) selling for
$12.98 in singles and $25.98 in limited-run two-packs. No Undecorated ready to run is found in 2002 release.
