An SD-24 diesel dressed in Norfolk & Western's passenger scheme maroon with gold herald and lettering was on the point of Lionel's 1982 Collector Series Continental Limited (No. 6-1260) set. Of note, the set is the first place to find the then-new tooling Extended Vision Caboose model and the set marks one of the final appearances for a 9700-series numbered box car release. The set's consist included a Norfolk Southern Box Car (No. 6-9461). The NS car was that other NS, not the NS the N&W was soon to merge into being with the Southern. An N&W Covered Hopper (No. 6-6106), N&W Cattle Car (No. 6-7301), Western Maryland (No. 6-6202), Illinois Terminal Box Car (No. 6-9738) and the mentioned debuting N&W Extended Vision Caboose (No. 6-6900). The example illustrated in the Lionel catalog for the N&W Extended Vision Caboose shows a different paint and lettering than production models. The yellow IT box car has an interesting connection, the N&W was taking over the Illinois Terminal about the time this set was available. You could buy the items as separate release or they all came handsomely packaged in a maroon box as The Continental Limited (No. 6-1260) set.
