Athearn's rivet-side 50-foot Mechanical Reefer joins the company's line in 1965. First appearance
for this release is the fall of 1965 in an Athearn advertisement promoting 24 all-new paint schemes and new 50-foot plug door
box car and 50-foot mechanical reefer.
The model is similar in design to Pacific Fruit Express (PFE) R-50-6 class (PFE #300713-301212). This group of PFE
mechanical refrigerator cars were constructed by Southern Pacific Equipment Company and date to the late 1950s.
