The 42-foot 3-Dome Tank Car is a 1957 release from Athearn. The car is initially labeled simply
"Oil Tank Car" by Athearn. The unlettered painted kits came in your choice of black or silver and sold for $1.25 each. The
first names offered on the model were: Deep Rock, Mobile Gas, Shell, and Texaco. The kit versions for the decorated tank
car models sold for $1.69. Athearn offered ready to run fully assembled exmaples of the first road names for $2.69 each.
The model is reviewed in the November 1957 issue of Model Railroader magazine. The review opens, "Athearn's new HO tank car
is a beautiful example of what can be done in plastic if a manufacturer really sets his mind to it." Plastic kits were in
their infancy in the mid to late 1950s. Prior to this time, freight car kits were metal, wood and cardstock offerings.
