Lionel's creative tooling department presents a new diesel offering in the 1981 Collector Series Maple Leaf Limited Set (No. 6-1158). The new diesel is labeled an SD-24 "Flat Top" model. For '81, Lionel added the angular "Spartan Cab" design found on many EMD locos to the company's bag of tricks. Similar to the design of the 1980 SD-9 diesel, the addition of the new cab created Lionel's SD-24 for this set. The Maple Leaf Limited rolling stock included: a CN Covered Hopper, Pennsy Box Car, British Columbia Single Dome Tank Car, Reading Box Car, CP Crane Car and CP Bay Window Caboose. Following a practice of many Lionel Collector Series sets, you could purchase The Maple Leaf Limited in a boxed set that featured all the pieces, less track and power pack.
