No.37-2100 Air-Cooled Stack -1998 Release
No.37-2000 Water Cooled Stack -1998 Release

The fall of 1998 brought a pair of Alco road switchers into the Kato HO-scale line.  Following the RSC-2, Kato introduced the RS-2 in the fall of '98.  Kato's RS-2 had truck variations per prototype (friction or roller bearing); an air- or water-cooled stack on the long hood; and the handrails were done correct for drop-step or no drop-step arrangement.  Seven roadnames (CP, CGW, D&H, GN, NYC, ATSF, and UP) were offered, plus Undec examples in both style variations.

Kato numbered the 1998 RS-2 models in the 2000's, with each roadname jumping by one hundred.  The Canadian Pacific RS-2 models were 2000's; the CGW's were 2100's; the D&H were 2200's and so on.  Each roadname received a pair of model with different roadnumbers, plus a version that was fully painted without a roadnumber.  That numbering followed until the final two roadnames of the 1998 set (Santa Fe and Union Pacific), which were put together in the 2500 series.  The Santa Fe was issued with two numbered examples, but a no number was not included in the release.
