For our 1970s survey of Lionel, the GP-20 diesel pops up first in 1973. Santa Fe
and Long Island in powered and dummy examples are two roadnames in 1973. Lionel's casual approach to prototypes is present,
as the rivet counter would point out this diesel is the company's GP-7 shell with a long nose. The Missouri Pacific GP-20
joins the Lionel line in 1975 with both powered and dummy examples listed in the catalog. The GM&O GP-20 pulling Lionel's
Heartland Express (No. 6-1764) is the only example of this diesel found in '77. A Chicago & North Western pair of powered
and dummy GP-20s are found in the 1978 catalog. A Burlington Northern GP-20 is included in 1979. For 1980, a Toledo Peoria
& Western GP-20 is found in the Cross Country Express (No. 6-1072) offering. The Burger King GP-20 is featured in Lionel's
Favorite Food Freight collection of 1981.
