For our survey period of Lionel production, this EMD GP7 diesel model arrives with
the 1973 catalog in two roadnames for its first year: Chessie and Grand Trunk. The 1973 Chessie example is the gold GM50
diesel. In reality, the gold GM50 was a Chessie System GP40-2, however Lionel selected its GP7 in O27 and GP9 in HO-scale
to represent this special loco. A black and orange Rio Grande GP7 is included in the 1974 catalog, as is the Grand Trunk
GP7 from 1973. Both have powered and dummy examples listed and both return again in 1975 A black Penn Central GP7 is found
in the 1976 Lionel catalog with a powered example only listed. Three GP7 diesels are included in Lionel's 1977 catalog:
The Rock, Norfolk & Western, and Penn Central. A Southern GP7 powered and dummy set is on display in the 1978 catalog, along
with a pair dressed in blue and white The Rock colors. Lionel omits individual GP7 offerings from 1979 to 1981. In 1982,
Lionel catalogs a blue and yellow Santa Fe GP7. The next Lionel catalog appearance for a GP7 is a green and yellow Chicago
& North Western, part of the 1984 Northern Freight Fyler (No. 6-1354) set.
