Released in 1990, Athearn's GP40-2 diesel model utilized the same base frame and shared design features with the company's
prior GP38-2 and GP50 diesel models. Original roadnames for this model include: BN, Conrail, CSX, Rio Grande, Seaboard System,
and SP. Undecorated examples were also offered. Powered examples originally sold for $30; unpowered models retailed for
$15 in 1990.
Jim Hediger reviews the 1990 Athearn GP40-2 release and notes the model represents an example similar to prototypes built
before 1983. Mr. Hediger also calls the correct width hood Athearn locos (GP38-2, SD40-2, GP50, and GP40-2) "second generation"
offerings. This would be a reference to the original Athearn practice of making hoods wider than prototype to accommodate
drive mechanisms. The review in Model Railroader may be found in the March 1990 edition.
Though road specific releases
were not commonplace in 1990, Athearn did release its "second generation" EMD locos with the modeler or railroad's choice
of being equipped or not equipped with Dynamic braking.
