General Electric's U30-B was built from 1966-1975 with nearly 300 examples going to eleven railroads:
ACL, C&O, CB&Q, Frisco, IC, L&N, Milwaukee, NYC, N&W, SAL, and WP. Athearn provided CB&Q, IC, Santa Fe, and later Chessie
System in HO-scale U30-B models. The Santa Fe never owned the U30-B, Athearn's roadnumber on the ATSF example of 6308 was
in reality a similar looking U23-B. The Illinois Central matches a prototype roadnumber, but the IC did not purchase the
nose headlight that Athearn included on its tooling. The same lightless nose goes for the Chessie System model, which would
have started life as a C&O boat. Burlington fans were satisfied with the Athearn U30-B, as the Q did buy this nose headlight.
Point of fact, Athearn's inclusion of the nose headlight on the GE boats and the placement of the dual headlights in the
nose of the GP35, SD45 and other EMD locos is very much a CB&Q road specific feature. |
