40' Hi-Cube Box Car

Union Pacific Hi-Cube Box Car

Sporting the "We Can Handle It" slogan from the 1970's, this is one of the most typical versions of the Union Pacific(371A) Hi-Cube Box Car. I do not have a sample with the "Automated Railway" map, as seen below. That version was the only one pictured in catalogs, rather than the "We Can Handle It" version.

Cataloged from 1978 through 1982, the 40' Hi-Cube Box Car in real life carried appliances. The TYCO model appears to be a "knock-off" of the Athearn kit, which is prototypical only for the Union Pacific. The car is model number 371 and was available in a trio of roadnames during its time in the TYCO line. As with many other TYCO freight cars, this car may be found with both 'open' and 'filled-in' steps.

Collector's Notes...

Lionel The Rock Hi-Cube

Collectors should be aware that there are many 40' Hi-Cubes available that all appear similar to the TYCO model. As mentioned above, the TYCO may be a knock-off of Athearn's model. About the same time the TYCO arrived, Lionel had a similar car in its HO-scale line. Bachmann later added this same model to its line of freight cars.

Also of note is the No.902-"Chug-Chug Sound in Box Car" Action Accessory. This car is basically a 40' Hi-Cube with the added attraction of the rock-tumbler-wheel in its middle to mimic the sound of steam engines. The No.902 car was produced in "Baby Ruth" and "Purina Chows."
