62' Triple Dome Tank Car

1973-74 line of Covered Hoppers

Pictured above is the first pair of Triple Dome Tankers from the 1972-73 catalog. Unique this first year are the paint jobs on both cars. Later models feature different paint schemes for each, see images below. Additionally, later models drop the ladder at the center dome.

Riding on triple trucks and boasting triple domes, this was the longest tank car offered in the TYCO line. It is first found in the 1972-73 catalog and remains available into the 1980s. Letter designations following the model number, 357, arrive in the 1975-76 catalog for each name. For example, adding an "C" makes the 357-C the 'Exxon' car. The original retail price given in the 1972-73 catalog is $3.50.

A favorite among collectors of both TYCO and Coca-Cola items is the above pictured Triple Dome Tank Car. The car was produced for many years and is certainly not the most rare among TYCO 62' tank cars, but it does seem fetch the highest bids on eBay when it appears of all examples of this model. In addition to this car, TYCO also offered the 40' single dome tank car and the 50' box car in Coca-Cola.

Collector's Notes...

Giving credit to catalog appearances, the rare offerings in this set are the 'Shell,' 'Mobil,' and 'Union '76' cars. However, I do see these appear with some frequency at swap meets and on eBay. The truly unqiue specimens are the original paint schemes for the 'Shell' and 'Gulf' cars, as seen pictured at the top of the page from their first and only appearance in this variation in the 1972-73 catalogs.

The 'Coca-Cola' model is reportedly offered in two variations, but I do not possess both to confirm this information. Check the Freight Car listings in The TYCO Model Trains Information Page for the story. The link to that page can be found on this site's home page.
