62' Hi-Cube Box Car

Introduced in 1972-73, this was one of three 62-foot long box cars in the TYCO line. Oddly, TYCO only offered this car in two roadnames, both of which were fairly prototypical! The car disappears after the 1975-76 catalog, however like many TYCO items it remained available on dealer shelves for sometime. Letter designations following the model number, 356, arrive in the 1975-76 catalog for both names. For example, adding an "B" makes the 356-B the 'Soo Line' car. The original retail price given in the 1972-73 catalog is $3.50, the price drops to $2.50 in 1975-76 listings.

Collector's Notes...

Though only cataloged for a few years, this car remains rather easily attainable. Perhaps the lack of creative names like 'Star-Kist' and 'Morton Salt' deter collectors from this item. IHC in recent years did a new run of this car, based on old TYCO molds. Close inspection of the underframe of the new IHC issued car even shows an oval marker that formerly held the TYCO name. IHC has offered this car in a number of great paint schemes. Among the IHC offerings are two versions of 'Union Pacific,' however neither matches TYCO's "Automated Railway"-map logo 'Union Pacific' car.
