1961 Civil War Centennial Train Sets

 
TYCO's Blue and Gray Civil War Centennial Sets are well-known and popular appearing in the 1961 and 1962-63 catalogs.  TYCO provided the sets the back cover of the '61 product catalog.  Included was the following describing the sets, "The year's most exciting and timely sets...comemorating the Centennial of the War between the States.  Authentic in every detail and packed in special full color gift box.  Special fly leaves give interesting commentory on role that railroading played in both sides of the conflict as well as reproductions of actual photographs.
 
Beyond the Civil War Cannons and the Union and Confederate Flags with Staffs, TYCO utilized selections from the existing 1860-series line to create both sets.

Blue Train-Centennial
(No.TC66 in 1961 and No.T6214A in 1962-63)
One of two Blue and Gray Civial War Centennial Sets was the Blue Train featuring an 1860-series 4-4-0 Locomotive and Tender lettered for U.S. Military R.R.  Additionally, the set included a Platform Car with two Civil War Cannons; Stock Car; Explosives Box Car; and Hospital Combine Car.  The Stock Car was TYCO's 1860-series Horse Car and the Explosives Box Car was simply the 1860s Box Car.  The catalog states that both sets also included Union and Confederate Flags with Staffs.  The set included track to build a 45" x 36" oval with Uncoupling Ramp (15729) and retailed for $34.98.

Gray Train-Centennial
(No.TC77 in 1961 and No.T6214B in 1962-63)
The other of the two Blue and Gray Civial War Centennial Sets was the Gray Train featuring an 1860-series 4-4-0 Locomotive and Tender lettered for Georgia-Central.  Additionally, the set included a Platform Car with two Civil War Cannons; Stock Car; Explosives Box Car; and Hospital Combine Car.  The Stock Car was TYCO's 1860-series Horse Car and the Explosives Box Car was simply the 1860s Box Car.  The catalog states that both sets also included Union and Confederate Flags with Staffs.  The set included track to build a 45" x 36" oval with Uncoupling Ramp (15729) and retailed for $34.98.

4-4-0 Steam Locomotive and Tender

TYCO cataloged both Civil War 4-4-0 1860-series Steam Locos as separate items beginning in the 1961 catalog.  The R-T-R examples retailed for $22.95 each.

Civil War Cannon
Though the Blue and Gray Centennial train sets only make it in the 1961 and 1962-63 catalogs, the accessory Civil War Cannon remained in the line for a number of years.  TYCO's Civil War Cannon (No.852) consisted of a pair of HO-scale plastic cannons and sold for forty-nine cents.
