The
December, 2011 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman includes a great article by David Leider, "The Pickle Industry
and Railroading." The article explains the manufacture of pickles and their connection to railroads. Few have probably ever
seen these unique freight cars in service. Leider states the closed-sided of coffin style car is gone from the rails
by 1950. The open-sided version displaying its tanks remained in service until 1970.
Mr. Leider concludes the pickle story by stating models have existed in the hobby for years.
These interesting cars have long been part of many rosters of model train companies. As a companion to the article, here
is a survey of the cars offered in HO-scale.
Over the years, the Pickle Car has seen numerous examples made in miniature. From flat stock craftsman
kits, to simple kits, to ready to run, you can find the Pickle Car has been part of HO-scale history for a long time and remains
with us in the 21st century. |
