Athearn introduces its plastic kit example in 1959. The two Pickle Cars arrive in the Athearn
line with the 40' Quad Hopper and 50' double door Automobile Box Car. Athearn did produce some fully assembled freight
cars for a time when this car was new. The Pickle car is among the R-T-R offerings and was available in both open- and
closed-sided versions.
Offered in two variations, Athearn would continue making this car into the 1990s. According
to Tim Blaisell and Ed Urmston's book "Standard Guide to Athearn Model Trains," the last run in kit form happened in 1997.
The tooling for the open-sided Pickle Car was moved to the Roundhouse line by owner Horizon Hobby in 2008.
