Lionel's 1976 catalog includes six Hi-Cube Box Car offerings. This is the first occasion for the Hi-Cube to be found in the annual Lionel O/O27 catalog. The originial collection included: Chessie, Illinois Central Gulf, Santa Fe, New Haven, N&W and Penn Central. The 1976 catalog shows a picture of an Iliinois Central Gulf lettered Hi-Cube, while the catalog references the model as Illinois Central.
The Hi-Cube is found again in the 1977 Lionel O/O27 catalog with new roadnames present. The Rocky Mountain Special (No. 6-1765) train set includes a Frisco Hi-Cube. Individual Hi-Cube offerings for '77 included: Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Burlington Northern added to the original six from 1976 listed again for 1977.
For 1978, Lionel puts the Hi-Cube to service as the car used in the Walt Disney Mickey Mouse Express collection. Nine new Hi-Cubes are listed with the Mickey Mouse Express. Individual railroad roadname Hi-Cubes are absent in 1978. Hi-Cubes remained sidelined and are not found in Lionel's annual product catalogs after the Disney group of 1978 until the 1982 catalog. For '82, Lionel includes a trio of Hi-Cubes: BN, Santa Fe and Union Pacific. All three roadnames had previously appeared, but these '80s examples differ by number and in some instances lettering and paint.
