1961 Train Sets

Blue Train-Centennial

One of two Blue and Gray Civial War Centennial Sets was the Blue Train featuring an 1860-series 4-4-0 Locomotive and Tender lettered for U.S. Military R.R.  Additionally, the set included a Platform Car with two Civil War Cannons; Stock Car; Explosives Box Car; and Hospital Combine Car.  The Stock Car was TYCO's 1860-series Horse Car and the Explosives Box Car was simply the 1860s Box Car.  The catalog states that both sets also included Union and Confederate Flags with Staffs.  The set included track to build a 45" x 36" oval with Uncoupling Ramp (15729) and retailed for $34.98.

Gray Train-Centennial

The other of the two Blue and Gray Civial War Centennial Sets was the Gray Train featuring an 1860-series 4-4-0 Locomotive and Tender lettered for Georgia-Central.  Additionally, the set included a Platform Car with two Civil War Cannons; Stock Car; Explosives Box Car; and Hospital Combine Car.  The Stock Car was TYCO's 1860-series Horse Car and the Explosives Box Car was simply the 1860s Box Car.  The catalog states that both sets also included Union and Confederate Flags with Staffs.  The set included track to build a 45" x 36" oval with Uncoupling Ramp (15729) and retailed for $34.98.

Gay Nineties Street Car "Main Street"

Listed as featuring a "totally new power truck," the 1961 Trolley set featured a red and yellow Main Street lettered example.  The set also included 4 pieces of special street style curved track; 1 straight section; and 1 straight terminal section.  The set retailed for $9.98.

Steel Yard
(No.T6102)
Featured a lighted Plymouth Diesel lettered for Republic Steel pulling a pair of Flat Cars with snap-on Load Skids and Girders, plus a 4-Wheel Caboose and circle of track.  Retail was $12.98 on this set.

Shipper's Express
(No.T6103; T6104; T6105)
Set included TYCO's F-9A; Flat Car with snap-on Load Skids and Girder; Refrigerator Car; Gondola; and 4-Wheel Caboose.  Track included enough to create a 36" circle.  The set was offered in two ways in three different roadnames.  The T6103 had New Haven equipment; T6104 was Santa Fe; and T6105 had a Canadian Pacific F-9A and Caboose.  Add a "P" to the stock number and it included a TYCO Power Pack.  The basic set sold for $14.98 and the Power Pack equipped set retailed for $22.98 in 1961.

Red Dot Special
(No.T6106 and T6107)
TYCO's 0-4-0 Steam Booster powered this set which featured a Flat Car with snap-on Load Skids and Girder; Refrigerator Car; Gondola with 3 Culvert Pipe Sections; and 4-Wheel Caboose.  A circle of track was also included in the basic set.  A New York Central example carried stock number T6106, while the Southern Pacific equipped set was T6107.  The basic sets sold for $14.98 each, adding a Power Pack put a "P" on the end of the stock number and increased the retail to $22.98.

The Keystoner

Consisting of a Pennsylvania Railroad F-9A pulling a Streamline Coach and Observation Car in Santa Fe dress that was TYCO's El Capitan set in 1960.  This set for '61 included enough track for a 45" x 36" oval and included a Portable Automatic Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $19.98.

The Chief

Consisting of the same F-9A pulling a Streamline Coach and Observation Car in Santa Fe dress that was TYCO's El Capitan set in 1960.  This set for '61 included enough track for a 45" x 36" oval and included a Portable Automatic Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $19.98.

Road Builder
(No.T6111)
Similar to 1960's steam powered Gandy Dancer work train, the 1961 set included had a Union Pacific Plymouth Diesel for power pulling a Derrick Car, Gondola with 3 Culvert Pipe Sections, the 40' Flat Car with snap-on Load Skids and Girder and a Gandy Dancer Bunk Car.  The set retailed for $19.98 and included a 45" x 36" oval of track and Portable Automatic Uncoupling Ramp (15729).

Black Diamond
(No.T6110)
A landmark set in the TYCO line as it is the first to feature a GP-20 Diesel Locomotive for power.  GP-20's would continue serving TYCO sets until the end of train production in the early 1990s.  This set is pictured with a pre-production example of the GP-20 model dressed in Illinois Central's Green Diamond Black scheme carrying roadnumber 9007.  This IC GP-20 is not known to exist in this paint scheme from TYCO.  The set also included a trio of Operating Hopper Cars and a 4-Wheel Caboose that ran around a 45" x 36" oval of track for $19.98.

Pace Setter
(No.T6112; T6113; T6114)
This set featured a powered F-9A and a non-powered F-9A pulling a Chemical Tank Car, Box Car, Gondola with 3 Culvert Pipe Sections, Operating Hopper Car, and Streamline Cupola Caboose.  With Pennsy equipment it was TYCO's T6112 set; Santa Fe power and caboose made it T6113; and a Canadian Pacific equipped example was T6114.  Without Power Pack the set sold for $24.98; adding a Power Pack also added a "P" to the stock number and raised the retail to $32.98.  This set's contents is very close to TYCO's Pacemaker set of 1960.

Colonial Limited

TYCO's Colonial Limited set featured a powered New Haven F-9A pulling a Streamlined Combine, Coach, and Observation Car.  The set included track to create a 45" x 36" oval and included a Portable Automatic Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $24.98.  Adding a Power Pack made it T6115/P and the retail was $32.98.  This set is the same as The Prospector (T6116) in the 1961 line.

The Prospector
(No.T6116)
Named after D&RGW's overnight Denver to Salt Lake City service, TYCO's Prospector set featured a powered Rio Grande F-9A pulling a Streamlined Combine, Coach, and Observation Car.  The set included track to create a 45" x 36" oval and included a Portable Automatic Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $24.98.  Adding a Power Pack made it T6116/P and the retail was $32.98.  This set is the same as the Colonial Limited in the 1961 line.

Red Bird East and Red Bird West
(No.T6117; T6118)
A B&O Shifter 0-4-0 powered TYCO's Red Bird East (T6117) set.  Also included was a Reefer; Operating Hopper Car; Box Car; Gondola with 3 Culvert Pipe Sections; Chemical Tank Car; Flat Car with snap-on Load Skids and Girder; and Streamline Cupola Caboose.  The set included track to create a 45" x 36" oval and had a Portable Automatic Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $29.98.  TYCO's Blue Bird West (T6118) had the same contents, but featured a Union Pacific steam loco and caboose.

TYCO Champion East Set

Champion East and Champion West

TYCO's Champion East (T6122) featured a C&O 4-6-2 Pacific pulling a Box Car; Operating Hopper Car; Stock Car; Flat Car with snap-on Load Skids and Girder; Reefer; and Streamline Cupola Caboose.  The set had enough track to build a 45" x 36" oval and included a Portable Automatic Uncoupling Ramp (15729).  TYCO's Champion West (T6123) had the same contents with Santa Fe power and caboose.  This set sold for $34.98 in 1961.

Sunshine Limited
(No.T6119)
The first train set appearance for TYCO's F-9B unit is in this set and the similar Zephyr Limited (T6120) set.  The Sunshine Limited consisted of a powered Atlantic Coast Line F-9A and non-powered F-9B pulling a Streamline Combine, two Coaches and Observation Car.  The set included track to construct a 45" x 36" oval and included the Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $31.98.

Zephyr Limited
(No.T6120)
The first train set appearance for TYCO's F-9B unit is in this set and the similar Sunshine Limited (T6119) set.  The Zephyr consisted of a Burlington powered F-9A and non-powered F-9B pulling a Streamline Combine, two Coaches and Observation Car.  The set included track to construct a 45" x 36" oval and included the Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $31.98.

Dixie Belle Passenger Set
(No.T6124)
An 1860-series set with the General 4-4-0 Western & Atlantic up front with an 1860 Combine and two Coaches.  This set is similar to what was offered in 1960.  The 1961 example retailed for $34.98 and included enough track for a 45" x 36" oval and included an Uncoupling Ramp (15729).

Golden West 1860 Freight Set

The Central Pacific General Steamer pulling 1860 series Water Car; Box Car; Horse Car; Platform Car; and Combine.  This set carries the second highest retail price for any TYCO set in 1961 at $39.98 and included track to operate a 45" x 36" oval, plus an Uncoupling Ramp (15729).

Round The Clocker
(No.T6121)
The same consist as in 1960 of a Reading 0-6-0 Big Six; Clearance Check Car (T319); Derrick Car (T325); Operating Hopper Car (T330); Floodlight Car (T320); and Gandy Dancer Bunk Car (T321).  The 1961 Round The Clocker set included track to build a 45" x 36" oval and also included an Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $34.98.

The Royal Blue Pacific Steam Passenger Set

TYCO's 4-6-2 Pacific Steam Engine pulling a Streamline Combine, pair of Coaches, and Observation, all dressed for Baltimore & Ohio service made up The Royal Blue again in 1961.  The set included a 45" x 36" oval of track and Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for $39.98.

Mammoth Of The Rails

The Mammoth of 1960 is back unchanged in '61 and still powered by a Santa Fe Mikado 2-8-2 pulling a Reefer; Animated Brakeman Box Car; Gondola with 3 Culvert Pipe Sections; Chemical Tank Car; Stock Car; Operating Hopper Car; Box Car; and Streamline Cupola Caboose.  The set included a 45" x 36" oval of brass track with an Uncoupling Ramp (15729) for its top of the TYCO line retail of $49.98.
