Amtrak Midnight Special

This set enjoys a long run in the Life-Like line. It is first found in the 1976 catalog.
That year's image is of a pre-production example of the set itself and a mock up of the set's box. As seen below, the
set featured in the Life-Like 1976 catalog includes a pair of Athearn Amtrak passenger cars substituting for the Life-Like
cars. The all dome passenger car is a Life-Like model, but notice its paint job. It appears to be a hand made
example and not a production run Amtrak all dome.
Life-Like introduces its F40PH diesel model in the company's 1978 catalog.
That year, Life-Like includes the Amtrak Midnight Special train set, but the image has the loco whited out and a message over
it reads, "New F40PH Loco." The stock number remains the same, 08762, but the power is switched in '78 from an F-7A
to the then new F40PH. The set retailed for $45 in 1978. The set is still in Life-Like's line in the early 1980s;
its '81 retail is listed as $63.
