62ft. Box Car

original 62ft. Box Car group

The original 62ft. Box Car group from the 1974-75 catalog.

The 62' Box Car, model No.361, is similar to the Express Reefer, model No.360. In fact, close inspection shows that the catalog picture of six 62' Box Cars in 1974-75 are actually Express Reefer models. The 1975-76 catalog corrects this mistake displaying a 62' double insulated plug door box car that is different in design from the 62' Express Reefer. The car is first offered at $2.50 retail and remains in TYCO's line into the mid-1980s.  Among the more interesting examples of the 62' Box Car is the Tropicana example, No.361-H, produced for a promotional train set in the mid-1970s.

Hunt's Snak Pack
(No.361-G)

Nabisco Oreo Cookies
(pictured at top of this page)
(No.361-?)
TYCO includes a blue 62' Box Car lettered for Oreo Cookies in the original group of cars displayed in the 1974-75 product catalog.  To date, I have never encountered a car like this one and would guess it to not exist beyond this prototype example.

Pepsi-Cola
(No.361-F)
Note the difference between the Pepsi car seen directly above and the one at the top of this page in the introductory group of 62' Box Cars.  TYCO's original Pepsi scheme with the large blue area opposite the Pepsi logo containing the slogan, "It's Got A Lot To Give" is not known to exist beyond this prototype example.  The production run 62' Box Car lettered for Pepsi is solid white without the slogan.  The reporting marks on the production run example reads PC 964203.

Pillsbury Flour
(pictured at top of this page)
(No.361-?)
TYCO includes a white Pillsbury Flour 62' Box Car in the introductory group of cars displayed in the 1974-75 product catalog.  To date, I have never encountered a Pilsbury car like this one and would guess it to not exist beyond this prototype example.

S.O.S.
(No.361-C)
TYCO catalogs the S.O.S. car for three catalogs (1974-75; 1975-75; and 1976).  The car's reporting marks read IC 359010.

Tropicana Orange Juice
(No.361-H)
Though uncataloged, TYCO did produce a 62' Box Car decorated for Tropicana with a green roof and ends and white sides carrying FEC reporting marks and car number 254331.  The car was included in a promotional train set offering in the mid 1970s.  TYCO also put Tropicana markings on its piggyback trailers.
