Proclaimed on the first two pages of the 1982 catalog as, "The winning
scene that changes model railroading forever!" TYCOSCENE was a simple idea and it's a wonder that it wasn't introduced years
before.
Another innovation that would have been welcome in the TYCO Era is
roadbed track. Today many companies offer track sections on plastic roadbed that easily and securely lock together.
Bachmann's EZ-Track is a great example of this roadbed track product. Certainly one of the operationaly nightmares was
attempting to keep those brass sections of TYCO track snuggly together. One basically was force to nail that older style
track down to a board to keep a layout together. Today's roadbed track allows for set up without a permanent board.
It's a shame TYCO never introduced a roadbed track system, when TYCOSCENE came along in the early '80s.
Supplied in some trainsets beginning in 1982, the TYCOSCENE layout board
is a heavy cardboard-like material called 'Duraboard.'
The pre-decorated board certainly adds to the play factor well
beyond the simple circle or oval of track set up on a naked piece of plywood or worse...on carpet or tile flooring.
TYCO offered a number of variations on its TYCOSCENE Layout Board during
the 1980s. Various train sets had unqiuely designed TYCOSCENE Layout Boards including The A-Time Giant Action Train
Set (No.7428); The G.I. Joe Electric Train and Battle Set (No.7418); M.A.S.K. Electric Train Action Play Set(No.7410); Rambo
Electric Train and Battle Set (No.7415); and The Transformers Electric Train & Battle Set (No.7430).
Offered first in the 1982 catalog, the TYCOSCENE ACCESSORY SET(No.7955)
offered a nice collection of layout accessories. This particular set was part of a special deal offered when a TYCOSCENE board
was purchased.
