40' Gondola (#341B); a silver Texaco 40' Tank Car (#315A); a blue Conrail Hopper Car (#344H); a green Burlington Northern
50' Box Car (#339E) and the General Purpose red streamline Caboose. The set also features the Frisco Autoloader with
six automobiles (#349) and an Auto Terminal unloading area. The 33-Piece Bridge and Trestle Set (#909) does the elevation
work for the 26-sections of track, which is all ran by TYCO's #895 Power Pack.
Rock Island Express
This train set featured a red-and-yellow Rock Island Lighted Shark Nose
diesel (#222-10); a green 50' Burlington Northern Box Car (#339E); a yellow Union Pacific 40' Hopper Car (#344E); and
a red with yellow roof Rock Island streamline Caboose. The set included TYCO's 17-piece Bridge and Trestle Set (#907);
14-sections of track to build a 36" x 45" oval layout and TYCO's #895 Power Pack.
The 1983 TYCO catalog has a picture of the set and the consist contains
the 40' Union Pacific Gondola with 3-Pipe Sections (#341B). The description in the catalog and the train set image provided
both state the set includes the 40' UP Hopper Car (#344E) and not the Gondola that is pictured.
Santa Fe Freight
This set is listed as NEW for 1983 and powered by a Lighted red-and-silver
Santa Fe GP-20 (#228-21) pulling a yellow 40' Union Pacific Hopper Car (#344E); a silver 40' Texaco Tank Car (#315A); a green
Burlington Northern Gondola with Pipe (#341G); and the red Santa Fe streamline Caboose. In addition to a standard
TYCO Power Pack (#895) and a 36" x 45" oval of track, this set included an Operating Grain Elevator (#870). Generally,
accessories found in train sets are also found as separate items in any particular catalog. The Grain Elevator was sold
separately in the catalog of 1982, but is not among the accessories in the 1983 catalog that the Santa Fe Freight set is found.
Returning unchanged from its debut in 1982 is TYCO's basic Switcher
Freight train set. Power is TYCO's Lighted Diesel Switcher (#241-21) in red-and-silver Santa Fe paint; a silver 40'
Swift Reefer Car; a yellow Union Pacific Hopper Car; and a red streamline Santa Fe Caboose. A standard TYCO Power Pack and
a 36"-circle of track complete this train set.
US-1 Road & Rail
The US-1 Road & Rail set was moved from the train products section
of the catalog, where it was found in 1981, to the US-1 Trucking section for 1982. For the '83 TYCO catalog, this set
is back among the train sets.
The train set contents were a Lighted Alco Century 430 in yellow-and-red
Rock Island dress (#235-10); a yellow 40' Union Pacific Hopper Car (#344E); a green 50' Burlington Northern Box Car; a silver
