Lionel 1970
                           catalog

Lionel's 1970 catalog includes Santa Fe Alco diesels as a twin set (No. 8020) with one powered and one non-powered Alco A unit. The catalog states the Lionel model is based on the Alco GE FA2 prototype. The Santa Fe red and silver Alcos return in '71. For 1972, you'll find the Santa Fe Alco in the Lionel catalog, plus a blue and silver D&H Alco A and B arrive. The blue and silver Santa Fe Alco arrives in 1973, along with the Western Pacific Alco A and B pair. Erie Alcos are new in '74. An Amtrak Alco A is at the front of the 1976 Lake Shore Limited train set offering. An Amtrak Alco dummy B unit is found in the individual loco listings. Lionel tries our two triple-set A-B-A Alcos in 1976; one set in Southern Pacific Daylight colors and the other in Canadian National. Lionel revises the lettering in 1978 for its red and silver Santa Fe Alcos. It is interesting to note that this variation of the famous Santa Fe warbonnet with large red Cooper type face is the simialr to the SuperFleet paint applied by the railroad begininning in the 1990s. Lionel applied it first in the late '70s. A Texas & Pacific Alco A is found on the point of the 1980 train set release Texas & Pacific Diesel, however the set and this Alco are not known to have been produced. For 1982, a pair of T&P Alcos arrive in the Quicksilver Express (No. 6-1253) set.
