Lionel's 1974 catalog includes the Spirit of '76 U36B (No. 6-1776) and notes it is a totally new Lionel engine. Lionel's Grand National (No. 6-1460) train set with Chessie System markings also features the U36B in 1974. The Lionel 75th Anniversary Special (No. 6-1585) set from '75 included a silver and red U36B with the Lionel logo. Also new in 1975 was a Union Pacific U36B powering the North American Express (No. 6-1560) set. The Chessie and Frisco U36B are found in the separate release section of the 1975 Lionel catalog. The Illinois Central Gulf U36B debuts in '76, along with a powered and dummy Burlington Northern example. A Big Sky Blue Great Northern U36B joins the line in 1977 in the Rocky Mountain Special (No. 6-1765) set. Santa Fe and BN U36B offerings are listed in the 1977 separate release section. Northern Pacific powered and dummy U36B diesels are listed in 1978. For 1979, the Reading U36B arrives in the Quaker City Limtied (No. 6-1971). A Southern powered and dummy U36B are cataloged in 1979. The Lionel Spring 1979 catalog supplement features the variation U36C in Southern Pacific colors. New in '81 are Monon powered and dummy U36B diesels.
