This 1975 catalog is the high point for variety of train items and new releases
ever in COX's line. New for 1975 are two locomotives (F3A and GP9) and the Trainscapes line of action accessories.
The catalog presentation is interesting as it is populated by a combination of
handmade prototype models. The GP9 examples displayed includes what appears to be a handpainted Championship Trails
model. The production run models are lettered Championship Train, not Trails, and this is the only year this Trails-lettered
model is found. On pages 34 and 35, you'll find what appears to be a typical production run example Santa Fe GP9
at the top of the page powering the American Freight Express. Look closely though at the Santa Fe GP9 at the head of COX's
Night Frieght on the lower portion of these pages. This second Santa Fe GP9 is a prototype example and differs from
the production models. Both F3A models on pages 34 and 35 are prototypes. Notice the U.S. Army example carries
roadnumber 97 and neither it nor the Chessie System F3A have slots in their sides and their pilots are not as open as the
actual COX production models.
Athearn-made COX items that had been sold since 1972 are down to only a Southern Pacific
Alco PA-1 found on page 37 and four companion Daylight passenger cars on page 38. These are the last of the Athearn-made
items to be found in a COX catalog.
