The Railway Express car is listed, beginning in 1971, as retailing for $2.50, fifty cents higher than the standard 51' Mechanical Reefer releases.  The 1972 catalog provides more detail standing the Railway Express model rides on 4-wheel Passenger Trucks.

The original Santa Fe Mechanical Reefer included reference to Santa Fe's Texas Chief.  Later releases of this car feature the darker orange color and large Santa Fe herald.  I find the large Santa Fe herald example first in Bachmann's 1983 catalog.

Bachmann's original stock number series for this car was 6240-6245. The 1968 catalog includes six roadnames (Safeway, PFE, NYC, Miller, Swift's and Santa Fe). The retail in '68 is listed as $2. The catalog includes an illustration of an Athearn HO-scale model lettered for NYC. Bachmann's stock numbering system changes with the 1969 catalog. The group of road names stays the same with numbers becoming 5461-5466. Stock numbering changes in the early 1980s and the 51-foot Mechanical Reefer moves to 53-1009 numbering with a $3.50 retail.
