Sharing the underframe used also by the 40-foot Box Car and Stock Car, the Plug Door Box Car was offered in four roadnames: C&O, DT&I, WM, and WP. The retail was $7 for this model, which was also the asking price of Atlas' Box Car, Stock Car, and Gondola models. I last find this model in annual product catalog for Atlas in 1978. The base tooling has in recent year returned in a modified version in Atlas' Trainman series of releases.

The Plug Door Box Car weighs 6.8 ounces and is 41 scale feet in length, or 46 feet out over its couplers. Roof pattern is Pullman-Standard design and the ends appear to be 3/4 Dreadnaught. Running boards are steel grate style and are separately applied. The plug door is 7.5 feet.

The Atlas 1970s O scale trains mostly featured talgo truck couplers. The coupler was a solid plastic casting and was not a functioning knuckle. My experience with them was positive and they worked well. This Western Maryland Plug Door example has been modified. The original Atlas trucks have been retained, but the attached coupler and pocket have been removed. A body-mounted Kadee pocket and spring metal working knuckle coupler has been installed.
